Insomnia, which is the inability or difficulty in getting to
sleep can be experienced by most people at some time or another in their lives. For the majority of people it is
temporary phase and if the underlying cause fades through time elapsing or if the cause is resolved another way, the
sleep pattern often returns to normal.
For some people insomnia becomes a regular habit and a way of life. It is vital to seek help as soon as you suspect that you have developed a regular problem with getting to sleep or having broken sleep.
As with any issue there are a wide variety of approaches to resolve insomnia and other sleep disorders.
None of these treatments can guarantee you a cure for insomnia. However most will have a positive effect
at least if not help towards overcoming sleep problems.
Typically, insomnia treatments can involve one or more of the following:-
|
|
1)
Pharmacological – this form of treatment for insomnia involves the taking of drugs or medicines.
These may be divided into two main areas. Drugs prescribed by your doctor and medicines that are
available from pharmacies, drugs stores or chemists that you select yourself and in effect self prescribe.
Often medically prescribed drugs will be of the SSRI type whereas self prescribed will be herbal or maybe homeopathic.
|
2) Psychological
– this sleep disorder treatment is aimed at resolving the possible causes of the
chronic insomnia. The idea being that if the cause is resolved then as a natural consequence the insomnia
will be cured too. CBT or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy looks are how we think and aims to change “wrongful” or
“unhelpful” thinking into more resourceful and useful thoughts. Hypnotherapy will often help identify the cause and whilst in
hypnosis, the hypnotherapist will help you change how you think and feel about that cause.
3) Stress management
– sometimes stress, worry or anxiety can cause sleeping problems.
Learning how to release and manage your stress levels can help make a big difference. Two popular and highly
effective ways of reducing stress and encouraging relaxation and sleep are meditation and self hypnosis. Self hypnosis
recordings on cd and mp3 which are aimed at specifically ending insomnia are useful too.

4) Lifestyle changes
– because we are creatures of habit, sometimes we can develop a
routine or way of living that is not healthy and its outcome can be insomnia. Sometimes our lives can just be a
round of work and little time to play or relax. If we have an analytical mind, then it can be difficult to switch off.
Recognising where we can make changes that allow still to do what we want to do but improve our mix of work,
play and rest can help re-balance our lifestyle and lead back to healthier sleep patterns.
